A Life Time Race

by Alexandria Lewis

Her son did not return home—

A mother cried last night,

taken by the ones who wore blue

even though he did everything “right.”

Growing up his father taught him “No, sir” and “Yes, sir.”

In any situation he was prepared.

violating his rights and holding him down,

even the crowd had to look down,

never did a parent think—

Two men mistook a young boy’s brush for a weapon.

Obedient to their firm and ridiculous commands…

A mother cried last night.

Malice of a world we live in,

A mother cried last night.

Never have we thought to still be living

in the same cycle our whole life.
