Overcome

by Kendra Burton

It could not manage on its own any longer.

This body was now damaged material,

systems failed.

She was rushed into the hospital room years too late.  The discovery of a body struggling to survive.

Less than a lifetime to go until it is released.

Chewed up and spat out by the wearer of the skin.

Her hair gradually followed suit,

leaving traces of her legacy.

“Invisible disease.”

Two years into the diagnosis, the correct medicine was prescribed.

In the guessing game of the medical world,

she was lucky with their second postulation.

Eventually, this disease overcomes the bodies of those infected.

It just depends on how long you’re able to fend off the attacker,

oneself.
